About This Tool

Convert PNG photos, screenshots, or transparent images to WebP. For icons with transparent edges, use the checkerboard preview to inspect transparency and edge quality.

How to Use

  1. Select or drag in a PNG and inspect its transparent areas.
  2. Set WebP quality, which defaults to 90%. A higher setting may help preserve text and fine lines.
  3. Click “Convert to WebP” and check details, transparent edges, and the actual change in file size.
  4. Click “Download WebP.”

Supported Formats

  • Input: PNG (.png).
  • Output: WebP (.webp, image/webp) with transparency support. Your browser must support WebP encoding.

Conversion Details

  • Transparent and partially transparent areas in the original PNG are preserved without adding a white or black background.
  • Quality controls the WebP image your browser creates. A setting of 100% does not guarantee lossless output; fine text and color edges may differ from the PNG.
  • Width and height stay the same. File size depends on the original image and quality setting; conversion may not make it smaller.
  • Converted images generally do not retain the original EXIF, GPS, or other metadata. Keep the original file if you may need its camera information later.

Maximum file size: 100 MiB. Files over 50 MiB trigger a high memory usage notice. Images are limited to 40 million pixels and 16,384 pixels per side. Resize larger images in another image tool first.

FAQ

Does WebP support transparency?

Yes. Converting PNG to WebP preserves transparent areas. The checkerboard preview helps you inspect them.

How are PNG and WebP different?

PNG is a lossless image format. WebP output here has adjustable quality but is not guaranteed to be lossless. Both can preserve transparency.

Is 100% quality guaranteed to be lossless?

No. Check text, lines, and edges in the preview. Keep the original PNG if you need to preserve the exact original pixel data.

Why didn’t the file get smaller?

Different images benefit from different compression methods. The result shows the actual size and reports any increase accurately.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Selection, preview, conversion, and download all happen in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to a server.
