About This Tool

Convert BMP bitmaps to PNG for easier sharing and use. BMP files vary in color depth and encoding; only files your current browser can read can be converted.

How to Use

  1. Select or drag in a BMP file.
  2. Once it loads, check the original preview and dimensions.
  3. Click “Convert to PNG” and check the result’s file size and transparent areas.
  4. Click “Download PNG.” If loading fails, first check that the BMP can be opened correctly.

Supported Formats

  • Input: BMP (.bmp) that your current browser can read. Not all BMP variants are supported.
  • Output: PNG (.png, image/png).

Conversion Details

  • BMP supports several color depths and compression methods. Unsupported or damaged BMP files will produce an error message.
  • If the original BMP’s transparency can be read correctly, the PNG will preserve it.
  • Image dimensions stay the same. Many BMP files become smaller as PNG, but this is not guaranteed for every file.
  • Converted images generally do not retain the original EXIF, GPS, or other metadata. Keep the original file if you may need its camera information later.

Maximum file size: 100 MiB. Files over 50 MiB trigger a high memory usage notice. Images are limited to 40 million pixels and 16,384 pixels per side. Resize larger images in another image tool first.

FAQ

What is BMP?

BMP is a bitmap image format commonly used on Windows and other systems. BMP files can have different color depths and compression methods.

Why won’t some BMP files open?

Your browser may not support the BMP’s encoding, or the file may be damaged. This tool supports only BMP files the browser can read.

Will converting BMP to PNG reduce the file size?

Often, especially for uncompressed BMP files, but there is no guarantee. Check the actual size shown in the result.

Will BMP transparency be preserved?

If your browser can read the original BMP’s transparency, the output PNG will preserve it. Not every BMP has a transparency channel.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Selection, preview, conversion, and download all happen in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to a server.
