About This Tool

Get the first frame of a GIF for a preview, document illustration, or static cover image. The page displays the frame that will be exported; waiting longer does not change the result.

How to Use

  1. Select or drag in a static or animated GIF.
  2. Check the first-frame preview to confirm it is the still image you want.
  3. Click “Extract First Frame as PNG.”
  4. Click “Download PNG.” For example, example.gif is saved as example.png.

Supported Formats

  • Input: valid GIF87a / GIF89a images (.gif, image/gif).
  • Output: a still PNG (.png, image/png).

Conversion Details

  • Only the first frame is exported. This tool does not convert the full animation to animated PNG or let you choose other frames.
  • The first frame is shown at the GIF’s full canvas dimensions. Readable transparent areas are preserved.
  • The resulting PNG is not animated. Keep the original GIF if you need the animation.
  • Converted images generally do not retain the original EXIF, GPS, or other metadata. Keep the original file if you may need its camera information later.

Maximum file size: 100 MiB. Files over 50 MiB trigger a high memory usage notice. Images are limited to 40 million pixels and 16,384 pixels per side. Resize larger images in another image tool first.

FAQ

Will the entire GIF animation be converted?

No. Only the first frame is extracted. Later frames and playback timing are not included in the output.

Why is only the first frame exported?

This tool creates still images and first-frame previews. It does not export full animations or offer individual frame selection.

Will the output PNG still be animated?

No. The download is a single still PNG image.

Will waiting longer give me a different frame?

No. The result always uses the GIF’s first frame, regardless of playback time.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Selection, preview, conversion, and download all happen in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to a server.
