About This Tool
This tool produces plain Base64 text without a data: prefix. Encoding preserves the original file contents, including the image format, quality, and any camera metadata.
How to Use
- Select or drag in a JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, or SVG image.
- Check the file type, original size, and image preview.
- Click “Generate Base64” to see the text length and encoded size.
- Click “Copy Base64” or “Download TXT.” For a complete data: prefix, use Image → Data URI.
Supported Formats
- Input: JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP, or SVG. Maximum original file size: 20 MiB.
- Output: standard Base64 text without a Data URI prefix (.txt).
Conversion Details
- Base64 is encoding, not compression. The text is usually about 33% larger than the original file, so it is not suited to placing large images directly in text fields.
- The original file contents stay unchanged. Decoding can restore the original file, including its existing image metadata.
- SVG previews exclude scripts and external resources. Base64 output still represents the original file you selected; preview adjustments do not alter the encoded content.
Maximum original image size: 20 MiB. Previews support up to 40 million pixels and 16,384 pixels per side. SVG must use UTF-8, with source content no larger than 2 MiB.
Privacy
Images are processed entirely in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.
This tool does not automatically save your selected image or result. Download or copy anything you want to keep before clearing the page or leaving.
FAQ
What is Base64?
Base64 is an encoding that represents file data as text, useful for inputs that accept only text.
Does Base64 compress images?
No. It only changes how file data is represented, without changing the image format, quality, or dimensions.
Why is Base64 larger than the original file?
Base64 typically represents every 3 bytes with 4 characters, increasing the size by about one-third.
Does converting an image to Base64 change the original file?
No. The output encodes the original file contents. Correctly decoding it returns the same file data.
Why doesn’t the output start with data:?
This page provides plain Base64. For the complete text with an image type and data: prefix, use Image → Data URI.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Selection, preview, conversion, and download all happen in your browser. Your images are never uploaded to a server.
