About This Tool

The dominant color extractor groups similar pixel colors and shows the largest group. Use it to find colors for backgrounds, palettes, or visual inspiration.

How to Use

  1. Choose or drop in an image.
  2. Review the dominant color swatch, HEX, RGB, HSL, and estimated share.
  3. Check the analysis dimensions shown in the results, then copy the color code you need.
  4. For several representative colors, use the palette extractor below.

Supported Formats

  • PNG, JPG/JPEG, and static WebP images are supported. Choose or drop in one image at a time.
  • Files can be up to 100 MiB, 40 million pixels, and 16384 pixels on either side. Large images need more memory, so choose a size that works well on your device.

Understanding the Results

  • The dominant color represents the largest group after color quantization. It is neither the average of all pixels nor a randomly chosen pixel.
  • Fully transparent pixels are ignored; other pixels are weighted by alpha. Black and white are included, and background colors are not automatically excluded.
  • The share is an estimate after sampling and color grouping, not an exact count of every original color.

How Colors Are Extracted

  • The tool uses consistent median-cut color grouping to produce up to five representative groups, then shows the one with the highest weight. The same image and settings give the same result.
  • Dominant color and palette analysis use up to 250,000 pixels, with a maximum side length of 1000 pixels. Large images are scaled down, and the results show the actual analysis size. Small images use all their pixels.
  • A large background often takes the highest share, so the dominant color may differ from the subject color you notice most. Use the palette to compare several groups.

Privacy

FAQ

What is a dominant color?

It is the most common or representative color group in an image. This tool shows the group with the greatest weight and its representative color.

How do dominant and average colors differ?

The dominant color represents the largest color group, while the average combines all included pixels. In a mostly red image with some blue, the dominant color is usually close to red, while the average includes blue.

Why can the result differ from the color I notice most?

People often focus on subjects and high-contrast areas. Color grouping instead follows pixel distribution and transparency. Large backgrounds, downsampling, and the merging of similar colors affect the result.

Does dominant color extraction use AI?

No. The tool analyzes and groups pixels locally in your browser. It does not upload the image or use online recognition services.
