File Names

Remove Filename Prefixes

Remove matching text only at the start of a name, preserving matching text elsewhere and the original extension.

All files are processed only in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.

About this tool

Enter a prefix to remove from the start of each base name. Removing IMG_ changes IMG_001.jpg to 001.jpg while leaving my_IMG_file.jpg unchanged.

How to use

  1. Select the files to process.
  2. Enter the prefix to remove and adjust case sensitivity if needed.
  3. Review matched, unchanged, and conflicting names. Make sure the base name will not be empty.
  4. Download copies with the new names.

Features

  • Matches only the beginning of the name, rather than replacing every occurrence.
  • Matches are case-sensitive by default. You can turn this off.
  • Preserves extensions and leaves nonmatching names unchanged.

Prefix removal rules

  • Your browser does not modify the original files on your computer. This tool creates downloadable files with new names.
  • The prefix is removed only when the base name starts with the specified text.
  • If removing the prefix leaves an empty base name, change the rule. An extension such as .jpg cannot serve as the new base name.
  • Recognizes common compound extensions such as .tar.gz, .tar.bz2, .tar.xz, .user.js, .min.js, .min.css, and .d.ts by default. Other names use the part after the last dot as the extension.

Limits

  • Select up to 1,000 files at a time. When downloading multiple files as a ZIP, their combined original size must not exceed 100 MiB.
  • Filenames must not include folder paths. Adjust the rules if a name is too long, empty, or conflicts with another name.
  • File contents stay unchanged; only the download name or ZIP entry name changes. Keep your originals and check the preview.

Privacy

All files are processed only in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.

File names, entered text, and results are processed only in your current browser. Your input is not saved automatically. Download any results you want to keep before clearing the tool or leaving the page.

FAQ

Will matching text in the middle of a name be removed?

No. Removing IMG_ only affects base names that start with IMG_. A name such as my_IMG_file.jpg stays unchanged.

Is matching case-sensitive?

Yes, by default. You can change this option; matching still checks only the start of the name.

What if removing the prefix leaves no base name?

Change the prefix or use another naming rule. Empty base names are flagged and cannot be downloaded as valid results.

Can the browser rename the original files on my computer?

No. This tool creates downloads with new names. Your original files are not renamed, moved, or overwritten.

How do I get the processed files?

Review the original and new names first. Download a single file directly, or download multiple files as a ZIP and extract the renamed copies.

Will the file contents change?

No. Renaming only changes the download name. The original bytes are preserved: images are not re-encoded, and text encoding is not changed.
