File Names

Sort Filenames

Arrange filenames alphabetically, by natural number order, by length, or by extension.

All files are processed only in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.

About this tool

This tool organizes a list of names without moving files on disk. Natural sorting compares embedded numbers numerically, placing file2 before file10.

How to use

  1. Paste one filename per line or select multiple files.
  2. Choose alphabetical, natural, length, or extension sorting.
  3. Review the sorted names, then copy or download the list.

Features

  • Supports ascending and descending alphabetical and natural sorting.
  • Supports shortest-to-longest, longest-to-shortest, and extension sorting.
  • Names with the same extension use natural order. Extensionless files form a separate group.

Sorting rules

  • Natural sorting orders file1, file2, and file10 by the numeric values in their names.
  • Extension sorting compares extensions first, then filenames. Names without an extension are grouped together.
  • The output is a sorted name list. Original filenames, contents, and folders are unchanged.

Limits

  • Select up to 1,000 files at a time. Pasted lists use one filename per line.
  • Alphabetical ordering can vary by language. Review the final list.

Privacy

All files are processed only in your browser and are never uploaded to a server.

File names, entered text, and results are processed only in your current browser. Your input is not saved automatically. Download any results you want to keep before clearing the tool or leaving the page.

FAQ

How does natural sorting differ from alphabetical sorting?

Alphabetical sorting compares text. Natural sorting recognizes numbers in names, so file2 comes before file10.

Can I sort by file size?

This page sorts by name, embedded numbers, name length, or extension. Use the File Size Checker to view actual file sizes.

Will sorting move files on my computer?

No. It only outputs a sorted name list. Your original files and folder structure stay unchanged.

Can I enter names without extensions?

Yes. They are grouped together when you sort by extension.
