Bitmap files can be up to 100 MiB; files over 50 MiB trigger a high-memory-use notice. Original and output images are limited to 40 million pixels, with each side no longer than 16,384 pixels. SVG files must use UTF-8 and be no larger than 2 MiB.

About This Tool

Circle Crop creates avatars or icons with transparency outside a circle. Position the circle using a square selection and the circular preview. The downloaded image still has square dimensions, with visible pixels only inside the circle.

How to Use

  1. Choose a photo or transparent image and check the centered circle selected by default.
  2. Drag the selection with a mouse or touch to position your subject. Adjust a corner or side length; width and height stay equal.
  3. Keep the default PNG or choose WebP if your browser supports it. JPG is not available for circular crops.
  4. Click Circle Crop, check the transparent corners against the checkerboard, and download.

Supported Formats

  • Input: JPG/JPEG, PNG, static WebP, and BMP images your browser can open, plus SVG files checked for unsafe content. GIF and animated WebP are not supported.
  • Output: PNG by default, or WebP with transparency support. JPG is not offered because it cannot preserve the transparent area outside the circle.

Image Processing Notes

  • Only the circular content is kept. The corners and everything outside the circle are fully transparent; the preview checkerboard is not saved in the file.
  • The selected square’s side length is also the output size. An 800×800 selection produces an 800×800 file with a circle 800 pixels in diameter.
  • The file still has square dimensions, with transparency outside the circle. Converting it to JPG requires a background color and removes that transparency.
  • PNG has no lossy quality setting. WebP offers quality control, but 100% does not guarantee lossless output. Any existing transparency inside the circle is preserved.
  • Downloaded images usually do not retain the original EXIF, GPS, or other metadata. Phone photos are corrected using their EXIF orientation before dimensions are calculated and the image is processed.

Bitmap files can be up to 100 MiB; files over 50 MiB trigger a high-memory-use notice. Original and output images are limited to 40 million pixels, with each side no longer than 16,384 pixels. SVG files must use UTF-8 and be no larger than 2 MiB.

FAQ

What format is the circular image?

PNG by default, or WebP if your browser supports it. The image has square dimensions, with transparent pixels outside the circle.

Why is PNG recommended?

PNG preserves transparency outside the circle without needing a background color. It also avoids the edge changes that can come from JPEG compression.

Why is the area outside the circle transparent?

Only the content inside the circle is kept; the outer area is fully transparent. The checkerboard is just a preview background and is not included in your download.

Can JPG save a circle with a transparent background?

No. JPG does not support transparency, so the area outside the circle would need a solid background. That is why this tool does not offer JPG output.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Opening, previewing, processing, and downloading your image all happen in your current browser. Your image is never uploaded or sent to an online image processing service.
