Bitmap files can be up to 100 MiB; files over 50 MiB trigger a high-memory-use notice. Original and output images are limited to 40 million pixels, with each side no longer than 16,384 pixels. SVG files must use UTF-8 and be no larger than 2 MiB.

About This Tool

Square Crop turns a landscape or portrait image into a picture with equal width and height. Move the square to keep your subject in frame or adjust its side length. The selection always stays square.

How to Use

  1. Choose a local image and review the largest centered square selected by default.
  2. Drag the square to move it or drag its corners to change its size. You can also edit X, Y, width, or height.
  3. Check that your subject is inside the square, then choose PNG, JPG, WebP, or an available original format.
  4. Click Square Crop and download. Reset Crop or Select Largest Square restores the largest centered area.

Supported Formats

  • Input: JPG/JPEG, PNG, static WebP, and BMP images your browser can open, plus SVG files checked for unsafe content. GIF and animated WebP are not supported.
  • Output: PNG, JPG, or WebP if your browser supports it. The original format is used when possible; inputs such as BMP and SVG are saved as PNG when their original format cannot be exported.

Image Processing Notes

  • The largest square uses the shorter side of the original image. A 1920×1080 picture starts with a 1080×1080 selection at X=420, Y=0.
  • Changing either the width or height updates the other side automatically. The selection keeps its 1:1 ratio and stays inside the original image.
  • The output size matches the selected square’s original pixel dimensions. For a specific size such as 256×256 or 512×512, use Resize Image after cropping.
  • PNG and WebP can preserve transparency. JPG blends transparent and partially transparent areas with your selected background color, which is white by default. The checkerboard appears only in the preview.
  • Downloaded images usually do not retain the original EXIF, GPS, or other metadata. Phone photos are corrected using their EXIF orientation before dimensions are calculated and the image is processed.

Bitmap files can be up to 100 MiB; files over 50 MiB trigger a high-memory-use notice. Original and output images are limited to 40 million pixels, with each side no longer than 16,384 pixels. SVG files must use UTF-8 and be no larger than 2 MiB.

FAQ

What does Square Crop do?

It keeps a square area of your picture and removes everything outside it. Both the selection and result have equal width and height.

What is the largest square in a 1920×1080 image?

1080×1080. It starts horizontally centered at X=420, Y=0, and you can move the selection left or right.

Is square cropping useful for profile pictures?

Yes, when you need a square profile picture. For a circle with transparent corners, use Circle Crop. The platform you use may display your avatar differently.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. Opening, previewing, processing, and downloading your image all happen in your current browser. Your image is never uploaded or sent to an online image processing service.
