About this tool
PDF metadata describes a document, such as its title, author, keywords, and creation date. It is separate from the text visible on its pages.
How to use it
- Choose a local PDF.
- Review the document properties, page count, file size, and available PDF version.
- Check the original dates and a readable version when they can be reliably interpreted.
- Use the PDF Metadata Remover below if you want to clear document properties.
Features
- Reads available title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation date, and modification date fields.
- Available XMP information appears separately. Missing fields are marked as not found rather than guessed.
- Metadata appears as plain text. HTML or scripts within a field do not run.
- Original date values remain visible so time zones and partial dates are not lost.
Understanding metadata
- Metadata is entered by the software that creates or edits a file. It may be missing, inaccurate, or different from the page content.
- Creator and producer fields describe the software used to process a document. They do not verify the author's identity.
Limits
- Files over 50 MiB display a memory notice. Each PDF can be up to 200 MiB. Complex content also uses memory, so choose files that suit your device.
- Password-protected and encrypted PDFs are not supported. Use an unencrypted copy you are authorized to access. Damaged or unsupported files may not open.
Privacy
Your PDF is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to a server.
Images, text, and generated results are also processed only in your current browser. Your input is not saved automatically. Download any results you want to keep before clearing or leaving the page, and keep your original files.
FAQ
What does PDF metadata include?
Common fields include title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, and dates. Some files also contain XMP information.
Where are the title and author stored?
Usually in the document properties. Some PDFs also store the same or additional information in XMP, and the two may differ.
How is metadata different from page text?
Metadata consists of file properties; page text is document content. Removing a title or author property does not remove names or other text from the pages.
How can I remove metadata?
Use the PDF Metadata Remover below to clear common document properties and document-level XMP, then download a new file. Read its cleanup limits first.
