Bicycles can be classified from intended use, riding position, frame design, drivetrain, and power source. In professional cycling, road, track, mountain bike, BMX, cyclocross, trials, and other disciplines are treated as distinct events. In the consumer market, bikes are more often grouped into broad categories such as road, mountain, hybrid, city, and specialty bikes.

The guide below covers nearly every common type found in recreational, utility, and competitive cycling.

🧍 1. Understanding Riding Positions

1. Upright Riding Position

Commonly found in:

City bikes, Dutch bikes, Japanese city bikes, cruisers, some folding bikes, and adult tricycles.

The body is nearly upright, and the handlebars are usually higher than or close to the bicycle saddle.

Advantages:

The open field of view makes cars and pedestrians easier to spot; the neck, lower back, and wrists carry less strain; everyday clothes work well; and frequent stops and starts are easy.

Disadvantages:

An upright torso creates more aerodynamic drag as speed rises; more body weight rests on the saddle; and the position is inefficient for fast, long-distance riding.

2. Semi-Upright Riding Position

Commonly found in:

Hybrid bikes, commuter bikes, touring bikes, gravel bikes, trail mountain bikes.

Lean forward moderately, but you don’t need to lean as low as you would on a racing road bike.

Advantages:

Comfort, control and pedaling efficiency are relatively balanced, making it the easiest position for ordinary people to adapt to in the long term.

Disadvantages:

Not as fast as a racing road bike, nor as extreme off-road capable as a professional mountain bike.

3. Sporty Forward-Leaning Position

Commonly found in:

Competition road bikes, endurance road bikes, XC mountain bikes, BMX racing bikes.

The body leans forward significantly, with part of the weight borne by the palms of the hands.

Advantages:

The air resistance is low and the pedaling force is efficient; the front wheel grip and direction control are more direct at high speeds.

Disadvantages:

When the size or setting is inappropriate, hand numbness, neck and shoulder fatigue, and waist discomfort may easily occur; cyclists need a certain amount of core strength and flexibility.

4. Low Aerodynamic Position

Commonly found in:

Time trial bikes, triathlon bikes, some track bikes.

Your upper body is nearly horizontal, with your arms resting on the aerodynamically extended handlebars.

Advantages:

Minimizes air resistance and is suitable for maintaining high speeds for long periods of time.

Disadvantages:

Vision, steering and emergency braking capabilities are affected; not suitable for crowded roads and frequent parking; high requirements on body flexibility.

5. Recumbent Position

Commonly found in:

Recumbent bicycles, recumbent tricycles, velomobiles.

The body is supported by a seat with a backrest and the legs are stepped forward.

Advantages:

There is little pressure on the wrists, shoulders, neck and perineum; the front windward area is small; and it is comfortable for long-distance cruising.

Disadvantages:

The bike sits low, making the rider less visible to drivers; starts, steep climbs, and low-speed balance can be difficult; and purchase, maintenance, and transportation are less convenient.

1. Race Road Bike

Usage: Road racing, fast group riding, high-speed training.

Posture:Obviously leaning forward, the handlebars are low, and the rider's center of gravity is forward.

Features:

Lightweight frame, drop handlebars, narrow and smooth tires, short wheelbase, responsive steering.

Advantages:

It accelerates quickly and is efficient on flat roads and climbing hills; it can easily change hand positions; it is suitable for long-term high-speed riding.

Disadvantages:

Aggressive stance; low tolerance for potholes and kerbs; weak cargo capacity; limited stability on slippery, gravel and broken roads.

Fits:

Those looking for speed, group riding or road racing.

2. Endurance Road Bike

Use:Long distance road riding, weekend rides, Gran Fondo.

Posture: Slightly more upright than a racing road bicycle, with a smaller gap between the handlebars and the bicycle saddle.

Features:

The wheelbase is longer, the steering is more stable, the tires are usually wider than traditional race bikes, and the frame may have some shock absorption design.

Advantages:

The comfort level is obviously higher than that of racing road bicycles; it is not easy to get tired after riding for a long time; it has better adaptability to ordinary urban roads.

Disadvantages:

Sprinting, tight corners and pure competition are less impressive; still not suitable for really rough off-road trails.

Fits:

Most people who want to buy a drop bar road bike but don't have racing as their main goal.

3. Aero Road Bike

Usage:High-speed flat road, sprint, competition.

Posture: Typically lower and longer, emphasizing aerodynamic efficiency.

Features:

Flat tube type, hidden cable routing, deep frame wheel set, aero integrated handlebar.

Advantages:

It is easier to maintain speed at high speeds; the advantages are obvious when racing on flat roads and gentle slopes.

Disadvantages:

Usually heavier and more expensive; may be more difficult to control in crosswinds; maintenance of integrated handlebars and hidden cable routing is cumbersome; aerodynamic advantages are minimal at low speeds.

4. Lightweight / Climbing Road Bike

This is a design direction within road bikes, rather than a completely separate model.

Purpose:Long-distance hill climbing, mountain road racing.

Stance: Close to a racing road bike.

Advantages:

The entire bike is light, responsive, and climbs hills and accelerates repeatedly with ease.

Disadvantages:

Extremely lightweight components can be expensive, durable and aerodynamic.

5. Time Trial Bike

Purpose:Individual time trial.

Stance: Extremely low, with forearms resting on aerodynamically extended handlebars.

Advantages:

Significantly reduces air resistance on closed or predictable routes.

Disadvantages:

The turning radius, braking operation and head-up visibility are not as good as those of ordinary road bicycles; not suitable for ordinary urban commuting and dense group riding.

6. Triathlon Bike

The appearance is close to that of a time trial bike, but the frame geometry is usually more emphasized:

Advantages: Suitable for long distance triathlons.

7. Track Bike

Features:

They are usually fixed gears and do not have traditional freewheels; track race bikes generally have no brakes; the tires are narrow and the bottom bracket is higher.

Advantages:

It has simple structure, direct dynamic response and strong acceleration ability.

8. Single-Speed Bike

It has only one gear ratio, but usually has a freewheel that stops pedaling and coasting.

Usage:Flat city commuting, low maintenance riding.

Position: Depending on the handlebars, it can be upright or sporty and forward.

Advantages:

Simple structure, low maintenance cost, light weight; no transmission collision or adjustment problems.

Disadvantages:

It is laborious to go uphill, and it is easy to miss the mark when going downhill; the efficiency is lower when the terrain changes greatly.

9. Fixed-Gear Bike

The rear wheel is directly linked to the pedals, and the pedals must rotate when the rear wheel rotates.

Advantages:

The transmission is direct and the structure is simple; the speed can be controlled through pedals; it is very popular in venues and specific cycling cultures.

Disadvantages:

The learning cost is high; the legs must rotate at high speed when going downhill; the operation is difficult in emergency situations. Road use should still be equipped with brakes that comply with regulations.

10. All-Road Bike

Somewhere between an endurance road bike and a gravel bike.

Usage:Paved roads, damaged roads, light gravel roads.

Posture: Semi-motor forward lean.

Advantages:

It's still brisk on the road while being able to fit wider tires than a traditional road bike.

Disadvantages:

Really loose, rough off-road capabilities are limited; the performance orientation isn't as clear-cut as a pure road bike or a pure gravel bike.

11. Gravel Bike

Usage:Highway, gravel road, forest road, long-distance adventure, light off-road.

Stance: More upright and stable than a racing road bike.

Features:

Drop handlebars, wider tires, more tire clearance, lower gear ratios, and more holes for water bottles, racks and bags. Common tires on modern gravel bikes range from 38 to 56 mm, but the upper limit depends on the frame.

Advantages:

The road surface adaptability is very wide; suitable for long distances and Bikepacking; wide tires can provide better grip and comfort.

Disadvantages:

Pure road speed is usually not as good as racing road bikes; complex mountain routes are not as good as mountain bikes with suspension; models vary greatly, and you should distinguish between racing, touring and off-road types when purchasing.

12. Cyclocross Bike / CX

Purpose:Off-road road racing, including mud, grass, sand, short slopes and obstacles.

Stance: Sporting a forward lean, the handling is more responsive than a road bike.

Features:

Drop bars, taller bottom bracket, shorter race geometry, bigger mud clearance.

Advantages:

It accelerates quickly, is easy to carry, and is suitable for short-term high-intensity competitions.

Disadvantages:

Typically not as comfortable as a gravel touring bike; has weaker rack mounting capabilities; and may not be as stable on high-speed descents as a long-wheelbase gravel bike.

The difference between and gravel bike:

CX is more like short distance racing equipment; Gravel emphasizes long distance, stability and multi-purpose.

13. Adventure / Bikepacking Bike

Can be developed from a gravel bike, a hardtail mountain bike or a dedicated adventure bike.

Use:Multi-day riding, remote areas, non-paved routes.

Posture: Focus on stability and comfort.

Advantages:

It has many mounting holes, low gear ratio and wide tires; it can carry tents, sleeping bags, food and maintenance supplies.

Disadvantages:

An unladen bicycle is usually not as fast as a competition bike; when fully loaded, steering, braking and pushing the bicycle will be more difficult.

14. Touring Bike

Usage:Long distance road trips, loaded riding.

Posture: Moderate forward lean, emphasizing all-day comfort.

Features:

Sturdy frame, long wheelbase, low gearing, rack and fender mounting holes, and usually the ability to mount panniers front or rear.

Advantages:

It is stable when fully loaded, easy to maintain and durable; suitable for continuous riding for weeks or months.

Disadvantages:

The entire bike is heavy; it's not lively enough when unloaded; and it's inconvenient to transport in the city.

15. Randonneur Bike

Use:Long distance endurance activities, Audax, light travel.

POSITION: More comfortable than a race road bike but still maintaining high road efficiency.

Features:

Drop bars, mid-width tires, fenders, small front bag, lights and long-distance supply.

Advantages:

There's a good balance between long-distance efficiency and practicality.

Disadvantages:

Not suitable for heavy mountaineering or very heavy luggage.

16. Expedition Touring Bike

Use: Cross-country, remote areas, bad roads and heavy-duty riding.

Features:

Extremely strong, super low gearing, wide tires, easily serviceable parts.

Advantages:

Durable, strong load-bearing capacity, and capable of handling a wide range of environments.

Disadvantages:

Heavy, slow, and potentially more expensive.

⛰️ 5. Mountain Bikes

Mountain biking is not a single genre, but a complete spectrum from efficient climbs to extreme downhills. The industry is often further divided into XC, Trail, Enduro, Downhill, Dirt Jump, Pump Track, and Electric Mountain Bike, among others.

17. Cross-Country (XC) Mountain Bike

Usage:Mountain climbing, long-distance forest trails, XC competitions.

Posture: Obvious leaning forward, emphasizing pedaling efficiency.

Shock absorber:

Hardtails usually only have front forks; full-suspension XCs have short-travel shocks front and rear.

Advantages:

The most efficient climber among mountain bikes; the bike body is lighter; suitable for long distances and undulating routes.

Disadvantages:

When faced with large drops at high speeds, rocks, and steep descents, the fault tolerance rate is not as good as that of Trail or Enduro bikes.

18. Trail Mountain Bike

Usage:General mountain forest trails, technical uphill and downhill, comprehensive entertainment riding.

Position:Centered, convenient for both pedaling and standing control.

Advantages:

The most balanced among mountain bikes; it can climb hills and handle more complicated downhills; it has the widest range of application for ordinary enthusiasts.

Disadvantages:

The race climb is not as fast as XC, and the extreme downhill is not as stable as Enduro.

19. All-Mountain Bike

Somewhere between Trail and Enduro.

Use:Rugger, steeper natural routes.

Advantages:

The downhill stability is stronger than that of ordinary trail bikes, while still retaining a certain degree of climbing ability.

Disadvantages:

Increased weight, rolling resistance and maintenance requirements.

20. Enduro Mountain Bike

Purpose: An Enduro race that mainly uses technical downhill timing and uphill transitions.

Position:

When going downhill, the center of gravity is placed back and the rider mainly rides standing; when going uphill, the rider can still pedal normally.

Advantages:

It is very stable when facing steep slopes, drops, rocks and high-speed curves; it can climb hills by itself better than Downhill bikes.

Disadvantages:

The bike is heavy and its tires have substantial rolling resistance; it is inefficient on flat roads and long rides; and suspension and brake maintenance costs are high.

21. Downhill Mountain Bike

Use: Chairlift or shuttle access to the top, followed by high-speed descents.

Position:Standing, weight set back, frame very long and relaxed.

Features:

Ultra-long travel shock absorbers, double shoulder front forks, powerful brakes, and solid frame.

Advantages:

Extreme downhill stability and maximum forgiveness.

Disadvantages:

Hardly suitable for long distances uphill; very heavy; extremely inefficient on ordinary roads.

22. Freeride Mountain Bike

Use:Big drops, jumps, stunts and unconventional routes.

Advantages:

The frame is strong and capable of withstanding impacts; it emphasizes aerial action more than a pure downhill bike.

Disadvantages:

It is heavy in weight, has specialized uses, requires higher technology and a dedicated site.

23. Hardtail Mountain Bike

"Hardtail" is a structural type and does not fully represent the purpose.

There are only front shock absorbers, and the rear wheels are rigidly connected to the frame.

Advantages:

Low price, light weight, simple maintenance, and high pedaling efficiency; the parts configuration is usually better within the same budget.

Disadvantages:

The rear wheel is prone to jumping on rough roads; the comfort and grip are not as good as those of a full-suspension bicycle.

Fits:

Beginners, mixed use between city and forest trails, XC riding, and those with a limited budget.

24. Full-Suspension Mountain Bike

There are shock absorbers at the front and rear.

Advantages:

Better grip and comfort on complex road surfaces; more stable when going downhill at high speeds; less impact on the body.

Disadvantages:

The price is high, the weight is heavy, and the bearings and suspension require regular maintenance; cheaper full-suspension bikes are often not as reliable as similarly priced hardtails.

25. Fat Bike

Usage:Snow, sand, and soft roads.

Position: Approach mountain bike.

Features:

The tires are extremely wide and have low tire pressure, using a large contact area to avoid sinking into soft ground.

Advantages:

It has strong passability on snow, sand and gravel; the tire itself has obvious cushioning effect.

Disadvantages:

The tires and wheels are heavy and have high rolling resistance; normal road riding is slow; and there are fewer parts options.

26. Dirt Jump Bike

Uses: Dirt jump, Pump Track, aerial action.

Posture: Mainly riding while standing.

Features:

Small frames, low saddles, short chainstays, strong wheels, usually single speed and short travel forks.

Advantages:

Flexible, impact resistant and easy to move.

Disadvantages:

Not suitable for long-distance riding while seated; inefficient for hill climbing and commuting.

27. Pump Track Bike

Very close to the Dirt Jump bike, relying on the body to press up and down to gain speed on the wavy track.

Advantages: Flexible and simple structure.

Disadvantages: Highly site-specific, limited daily use.

28. Trials Bike

Purpose:Jumping, anchoring and balancing on rocks, steps and artificial obstacles.

Features:

Very low or no traditional bike saddle, ultra-low frame, powerful brakes, short and responsive geometry.

Advantages:

Excellent low speed control capability.

Disadvantages:

Hardly suitable for normal commuting and long distance riding.

🏙️ 6. City and Everyday Utility Bikes

29. City Bike

Usage:Short-distance commuting, shopping, and daily transportation.

Posture: Upright or semi-upright.

Features:

Flat or swept handlebars, often with fenders, racks, footrests and lights.

Advantages:

Easy to ride, simple to maintain, and highly practical on a daily basis.

Disadvantages:

The weight is usually large; the efficiency of long-distance high-speed riding is average.

30. Japanese City Bike / Mamachari

City Cycle/ママチャリ

This is one of the most common everyday bikes in Japan.

Use: Station commuting, grocery shopping, picking up children, and short-distance daily transportation.

Posture:Very upright.

Features:

Low standover frame, basket, fenders, chain cover, foot brace, ring lock, some models come with internal transmission and generator hub light.

Advantages:

It is easy to mount and dismount in everyday clothes, convenient for carrying items, low-maintenance, and well suited to rain and daily errands.

Disadvantages:

Usually heavier; transmission efficiency and speed are average; long slope, long distance and sports riding experience are poor.

31. Dutch Bike / Roadster

Use:Daily transportation in flat cities.

Posture:Extremely upright.

Features:

Swept handlebars, full chain guard, fenders, rack, internal shifting, solid frame.

Advantages:

Durable, clothes are not easily stained by the chain; comfortable, stable and practical.

Disadvantages:

Very heavy; difficult to ride in hilly cities; difficult to carry upstairs.

32. Hybrid Bike

A cross between a road bike and a mountain bike.

Use:Urban roads, bike paths, light gravel and casual riding.

Posture:Semi-upright.

Features:

Flat handlebars, medium-width tires, wider gear ratios; some models have short-stroke shock absorber front forks.

Advantages:

Easy to control, versatile and comfortable; suitable for ordinary riders without clear competitive goals.

Disadvantages:

Slower than a road bike and less capable off-road than a true mountain bike; low-end suspension forks may add weight but have limited effect.

33. Fitness Bike / Flat-Bar Road Bike

Looks like a hybrid bike, but closer to a flat-bar road bike.

Usage:Fast commuting, fitness, long distance in the city.

Stance: More forward than a regular hybrid bike.

Features:

Lightweight rigid fork, narrow tires, flat handlebars, road-oriented transmission.

Advantages:

The speed is close to that of a road bike, but the braking and handling are more intuitive than a drop-bar bike.

Disadvantages:

There are fewer hand positions; long-distance riding into the wind is not as labor-saving as a drop-bar bike; and its off-road capabilities are limited.

34. Commuter Bike

"Commuter bike" is a use category and is not limited to one structure.

It may consist of a city bike, a hybrid bike, an exercise bike, a folding bike or an e-bike.

The ideal configuration usually includes:

Mud flaps, racks or bags, puncture-resistant tires, lights, kickstands, reliable brakes and gears suitable for local grades.

Advantages:

Designed for everyday use, combining reliability and practicality.

Disadvantages:

Usually heavier with attachments added.

35. Cruiser Bike

Use:Seaside, flat roads, slow leisure riding.

Posture: Very relaxed, handlebars swept back, footpegs probably further forward.

Advantages:

Retro style; comfortable at low speeds; easy to enjoy the scenery.

Disadvantages:

It is heavy and has high wind resistance; it is difficult to climb hills; it is inefficient over long distances; and its swept-back handlebar is not suitable for intense maneuvering.

36. Beach Cruiser

A branch of cruiser bikes that often use wide tires and single speed or simple internal shifting.

Being suitable for flat coastal roads does not mean that you can ride efficiently on soft sand; riding on real sand is usually more suitable for a Fat Bike.

37. Folding Bike

Usage: Subway and bicycle combination commuting, car trunk travel, and residences with limited space.

Posture: Mostly upright or semi-upright.

Advantages:

After folding, it is easy to store, bring indoors or combine with public transportation; the small-wheel model can turn flexibly in the city. Folding bike models such as the Brompton also often offer different handlebar heights to adjust the uprightness.

Disadvantages:

The folding structure increases weight and price; the performance of the same price range is usually not as good as that of non-folding bicycles; the small wheels are more sensitive to potholes and the riding feel is more flexible.

NOTE:

It’s not that the smaller the wheel, the smaller it will be after folding; the folding mechanism and frame layout are more important.

38. Mini Velo

It uses small wheels, but its frame size and riding position are close to those of ordinary adult bikes, and it usually cannot be folded.

Usage:Urban cycling, indoor storage, personalized modification.

Advantages:

Easy to start, small in size and flexible in control.

Disadvantages:

Small wheels are more sensitive to potholes; high-speed stability and roll retention are generally not as good as those of larger wheels.

📦 7. Cargo and Family Bikes

39. Longtail Cargo Bike

The frame and rack behind the rear wheels are significantly longer.

Purpose:Carrying children, adult passengers, shopping and delivery.

Posture: Upright or semi-upright.

Advantages:

The width is close to that of an ordinary bicycle, making it easy to pass through narrow roads; it can be installed with child seats, pedals, fences and large side bags. Some modern long-tail e-bikes can carry two children or one adult passenger, but the overall weight and racking limits of the specific bike must be strictly adhered to.

Disadvantages:

Bicycles are long and heavy; the load on the rear changes handling; parking and handling are difficult.

40. Long John / Bakfiets

There is a large cargo box between the front wheel and the rider.

Usage:Carry children, pets, large shopping, and commercial delivery.

Advantages:

The rider can see cargo or children; the center of gravity is generally low; and there is plenty of loading space.

Disadvantages:

The bicycle body is very long; the steering feels special when riding for the first time; the parking space is large; and it is difficult to climb hills with a full load without electric assistance.

41. Cargo Trike

There are two wheels and a large cargo box in the front or rear.

Advantages:

No need to use feet for support when parking; stable loading and unloading at low speed; suitable for large cargo and mobile commerce.

Disadvantages:

It cannot lean naturally in turns like a two-wheeler; fast cornering can create a rollover risk; and its width takes up more road and storage space.

BMX racing and BMX freestyle belong to different competitive events; freestyle can be subdivided into Park, Street, Flatland and Dirt.

42. BMX Racing Bike

Purpose:Short distance dirt track racing.

Posture: Mainly standing and sprinting.

Features:

Small wheels, lightweight yet strong frame, single speed, low saddle, fast accelerating gears.

Advantages:

Extremely fast acceleration and nimble for jumps and track waves.

Disadvantages:

Not suitable for long-distance riding in a seated position; the transmission ratio is not suitable for commuting on steep slopes.

43. Street BMX

Uses:Steps, railings, walls and urban barriers.

Features:

The frame and wheels are very strong, and Peg foot posts are often installed.

Advantages:

Impact-resistant, easy to complete rotation and sliding movements.

Disadvantages:

Very heavy, the bicycle saddle is extremely low, and it is inefficient for daily riding.

44. Park BMX

Use: Bowl, halfpipe and artificial skate park.

Usually slightly lighter than Street BMX, emphasizing flight and spin.

45. Flatland BMX

Purpose: Complete balancing and rotating actions on flat ground.

Features:

Short frame, special stem and footpost, very responsive geometry.

Advantages:Strong low-speed skills.

Disadvantages: Extremely specialized in use.

46. Dirt BMX

Used for dirt jumps, they are generally more stable and have a better tread pattern for dirt.

⚙️ 9. Special-Design Bikes

47. Recumbent Bicycle

Usage:Long distance cruising, leisure, partial speed riding.

Position:Lie back with legs forward.

Advantages:

The seat has a large support area; little pressure on the wrists, shoulders and neck; low aerodynamic resistance; comfortable for long distances.

Disadvantages:

Two-wheeled recumbent bicycles are difficult to balance at low speeds; the bicycle is long; they cannot stand up and rock the bicycle on steep slopes; and their visibility in traffic is low.

48. Recumbent Trike

Common ones are:

  • Tadpole structure with two in front and one in back
  • Delta structure of the first one and the second one

Advantages:

There is no need to maintain balance when parking and at low speeds; the seat is comfortable; suitable for leisure long distances and those with limited mobility.

Disadvantages:

The trike is wide and heavy; drainage channels and roadside obstacles can be troublesome; and transportation and storage are difficult.

49. Velomobile

Add an aerodynamic body shell to a lying three-wheel or four-wheel chassis.

Purpose:Long-distance high-speed cruising, all-weather commuting.

Advantages:

It has low wind resistance; can provide certain protection from rain and snow; and has strong ability to maintain speed on flat roads.

Disadvantages:

Expensive, heavy, poor heat dissipation; slow to climb hills; large in size; difficult to repair in collisions.

50. Tandem Bicycle

Two or more riders line up one behind the other and work together to drive the bike.

The front rider is responsible for steering, braking and shifting, while the rear rider provides the main power.

Advantages:

The two people can output power together, but the frontal windward area is not doubled, so the cruising speed on flat roads can be very high; it is also suitable for two people with different physical strength to ride together.

Disadvantages:

Requires a high degree of coordination; the bicycle body is long and difficult to turn and park; the tires, wheels and brakes bear greater loads; transportation and storage are difficult.
