Minecraft has hundreds of craftable blocks and items, but everyday survival keeps bringing you back to a core set of supplies. From your first crafting table, furnace, torches, and bed to shields, bows, crossbows, maps, compasses, minecarts, and rails, learning these basics makes the move from scraping by to exploring and building much smoother.
This guide covers recipes and uses for 20 items: the crafting table, furnace, blast furnace, smoker, chest, barrel, bed, torch, shield, bow, crossbow, arrow, shears, flint and steel, compass, clock, map, lead, minecart, and rail.
- Version coverage: This guide follows mainstream survival rules in the 2026 stable releases. Java Edition now uses the 26 series; 26.2 launched in June 2026. As of September 8, 2026, 26.3 was still in prerelease, so its test features are not treated as stable-release rules here.
- Updated recipes: Modern Bedrock Edition barrels use planks. Since Chase the Skies, leads require only string, with no slimeball.

I. Recipe Reference and Crafting Basics
1. Materials and Output for All 20 Items
Quick reference: Check the quantities, then follow the row layouts below. Each recipe produces one item unless otherwise stated.
- Crafting table: 4 planks β 1 crafting table.
- Furnace: 8 cobblestone, blackstone, or cobbled deepslate β 1 furnace.
- Blast furnace: 5 iron ingots, 1 furnace, and 3 smooth stone β 1 blast furnace.
- Smoker: 1 furnace and 4 eligible logs or wood blocks β 1 smoker.
- Chest: 8 planks β 1 chest.

Recipes are either shaped or shapeless. Most tools and functional blocks require ingredients to keep their relative positions. Smaller shaped recipes can usually be moved within the grid, and some can be mirrored horizontally. The in-game recipe book shows recipes you have unlocked.
Layouts below read from top to bottom and left to right. βEmptyβ means leave that slot clear. If a recipe lists only two rows or one column, keep the shown arrangement and leave the other slots empty.
II. The Crafting Table and Three Smelting Stations
2. Crafting Table: Recipe, Uses, and Early Progression
Materials: 4 planks of any type produce 1 crafting table. One log makes 4 planks, and your inventory's 2Γ2 crafting grid is enough for this recipe.
- Top row: Plank | Plank.

A crafting table provides a 3Γ3 grid for ordinary crafting recipes, including tools, weapons, armor, furnaces, chests, shields, redstone components, minecarts, rails, enchanting tables, and many building blocks. Smelting, brewing, and other processing methods require their own stations.
Starting route: Chop a tree β turn logs into planks β make a crafting table β make a wooden pickaxe β mine stone β switch to stone tools. Make your table after chopping your first tree.
A broken crafting table drops as an item, so you can carry one. On long mining trips, Nether expeditions, or distant adventures, place it, craft what you need, and pick it back up instead of returning to base.
3. Furnace Recipe
Materials: 8 cobblestone, blackstone, or cobbled deepslate produce 1 furnace. These are valid ingredients; not every block that looks like stone will work.

Arrange the ingredients around an empty center. A furnace becomes useful almost immediately after you reach the stone-tool stage.
4. What a Furnace Can Process
Metals: Raw iron β iron ingots; raw gold β gold ingots; raw copper β copper ingots.
Food: Raw beef β steak; raw porkchops β cooked porkchops; raw chicken β cooked chicken; potatoes β baked potatoes.
Blocks and materials: Cobblestone β stone; stone β smooth stone; sand β glass; clay balls β bricks; clay blocks β terracotta; logs β charcoal.
A regular furnace usually processes one item in about 10 seconds. Blast furnaces and smokers take about 5 seconds for eligible items, but their processing options are more limited.
5. Fuel Choices and the Charcoal Backup
Fuel efficiency: With continuous smelting and no wasted burn time, common fuels process the following quantities.
- Plank: About 1.5 items each.
- Coal: 8 items each.
- Charcoal: 8 items each.
- Block of coal: 80 items each.
- Dried kelp block: 20 items each.
- Blaze rod: 12 items each.
- Lava bucket: 100 items per bucket.
Eight coal can continuously smelt 8Γ8 = 64 items, exactly one full stack. Lava buckets suit large batches; if the input runs out early, the remaining fuel burn time is wasted.
If you cannot find coal, put logs in a furnace and burn planks or another fuel to make charcoal. Charcoal works for torches and further smelting. Even a forest start supports the route βlogs β charcoal β torches β mining.β
6. Blast Furnace Recipe
Materials: 5 iron ingots, 1 furnace, and 3 smooth stone produce 1 blast furnace.
- Top row: Iron ingot | Iron ingot | Iron ingot.
- Middle row: Iron ingot | Furnace | Iron ingot.
- Bottom row: Smooth stone | Smooth stone | Smooth stone.
Smooth stone takes two smelting passes: first turn cobblestone into stone, then smelt that stone again. A blast furnace therefore usually comes after you have a regular furnace and an iron supply.
7. Blast Furnace: Materials, Speed, and Villagers
Main use: Quickly process eligible ores, raw metals, and metal equipment that can be smelted down. Examples include raw iron, raw gold, raw copper, iron ore, gold ore, copper ore, and smeltable iron or gold gear.
Eligible items take about 5 seconds, roughly twice as fast as a regular furnace. Raw meat, potatoes, sand, and cobblestone cannot be processed in a blast furnace.
Fuel use: Fuel burns faster too. When fully used, the fuel cost per item is the same as in a regular furnace. Switching stations does not let one coal smelt more items; it saves waiting time.
A blast furnace is also an armorer villager's job site block, making it useful in trading halls.
8. Smoker Recipe
Materials: 1 furnace and 4 eligible logs or wood blocks produce 1 smoker. Use the log or wood ingredients allowed by the recipe; planks are not a direct substitute.

Place the four wood ingredients in a cross around the furnace.
9. When a Smoker Is Worth Building
Main use: Cook food quickly, at about 5 seconds per itemβtwice the speed of a regular furnace. Fuel also burns faster, so the fuel needed per item does not decrease.
Smokers handle raw beef, porkchops, mutton, chicken, rabbit, cod, salmon, potatoes, kelp, and other eligible foods. They cannot smelt iron.
A regular furnace is fine for the occasional meal. Once you have a cow, pig, chicken, or other automatic farm producing large batches of ingredients, a smoker becomes much more convenient.
The smoker is also a butcher villager's job site block.
III. Storage, Sleep, and Lighting
10. Chest Recipe
Materials: 8 planks produce 1 chest.
- Top row: Plank | Plank | Plank.

Surround an empty center with planks. Store ores, blocks, and food you do not currently need so your inventory has room for exploration loot.
11. Chest Capacity and Opening Problems
Capacity: A single chest has 27 slots. Two adjacent, correctly connected chests form a large chest with 54 slots.
If every slot holds a full stack of 64, a large chest stores 54Γ64 = 3,456 items. Nonstackable items and items with smaller stack limits reduce that total.
Certain blocks above a chest can keep it from opening, and a cat sitting on it can also block access. Java and Bedrock differ in some obstruction rules, so leave suitable clearance above chest lids when designing storage.
12. The Current Barrel Recipe and Older Versions
Materials: 6 planks and 2 wooden slabs produce 1 barrel.
- Top row: Plank | Wooden slab | Plank.
- Middle row: Plank | Empty | Plank.
- Bottom row: Plank | Wooden slab | Plank.
Older Bedrock versions used 6 sticks and 2 wooden slabs. Bedrock 1.20.10 replaced the sticks with planks, so modern Java and Bedrock both use 6 planks and 2 wooden slabs. Following an old stick-based tutorial is a common reason the recipe fails.
13. Choosing Between Barrels and Chests
Single-container capacity: Both have 27 slots. A barrel still opens with a block above it, making it useful under floors, inside walls, beneath stairs, in compact storage rooms, and as part of a build's dΓ©cor.
- Larger containers: Chests connect into 54-slot large chests; barrels do not merge.
- Overhead clearance: Obstructions may stop a chest from opening. Barrels have no equivalent lid-clearance requirement.
- Villager jobs: Chests are not job site blocks. Barrels are used by fishermen.
- Large storage rooms: Chest β β β β β ; barrel β β β β β.
- Compact builds: Chest β β β ββ; barrel β β β β β .
Use large chests for bulk sorting and storage. Barrels offer more flexibility when you want storage built into the architecture.
14. Bed Recipe
Materials: 3 wool of the same color and 3 planks produce 1 bed.
- Top row: Same-color wool | Same-color wool | Same-color wool.
- Bottom row: Plank | Plank | Plank.
For example, use 3 white wool across the top to make a white bed. All wool must match, but you can mix plank types.
15. Sleeping and Setting a Respawn Point
Skipping the night: When sleeping conditions are met in the Overworld, sleep advances time to day and eases early nighttime survival. Multiplayer worlds must also meet the sleeping-player requirement in their server or world settings.
Setting a respawn point: After you set your spawn at a bed, the game tries to respawn you nearby when you die. If the bed is removed, destroyed, obstructed, or otherwise invalid, you may return to the world spawn area instead.
Before moving or traveling far, check your bed's location and surrounding space. A respawn point you set earlier is not guaranteed to remain usable.
16. Beds Explode in the Nether and the End
Dimension rules: Trying to sleep in the Nether or the End triggers an explosion. Overworld sleeping habits do not carry over to those dimensions.
Experienced players can use this mechanic to blast through netherrack while searching for ancient debris, or deal heavy explosive damage to the Ender Dragon in the End.
Those techniques require careful positioning and cover. On your first Nether trip, treat a bed as an explosive item, not a place to rest or set your respawn point.
17. Torch Recipe
Materials: 1 coal or charcoal and 1 stick produce 4 torches.
- Upper slot: Coal or charcoal.
- Lower slot: Stick.
Place the two ingredients vertically. Your inventory's 2Γ2 crafting grid is enough.
18. Lighting, Spawn Prevention, and Cave Navigation
Lighting: A regular torch emits block light level 14, which fades with distance. Most ordinary Overworld hostile mobs need very dark conditions to spawn naturally in modern versions. Well-placed torches help prevent spawning, but do not stop every mob or spawning mechanism.
Cave navigation: Put torches consistently on the right wall as you enter, then follow torches on your left to return. Keep that habit at branches to make the route easier to recognize than a random torch trail.
Supplies: If coal is unavailable, smelt logs into charcoal and combine it with sticks. With wood and a working furnace, you can keep replenishing your lighting supplies.
IV. Shields, Ranged Weapons, and Useful Tools
19. Shield Recipe
Materials: 6 planks and 1 iron ingot produce 1 shield.
- Top row: Plank | Iron ingot | Plank.
- Middle row: Plank | Plank | Plank.
- Bottom row: Empty | Plank | Empty.
A shield costs just 1 iron ingot, making it a strong early priority. It gives you much more room for error against skeletons and other early enemies.
20. What Shields Blockβand Their Limits
Frontal protection: A raised shield blocks many attacks from ahead, including skeleton arrows, zombie melee attacks, pillager bolts, and some frontal blast threats. Approaching a cave skeleton with your shield raised is usually safer than rushing in.
A shield does not eliminate damage from falls, poison, hunger, lava, the void, or attacks from behind. Whether a particular attack can be blocked also depends on its type and the edition's mechanics.
Durability: Base durability is 336. You can repair a shield with planks in an anvil. Check its remaining durability before a long trip so it does not break during repeated fights.
21. Bow Recipe
Materials: 3 sticks and 3 string produce 1 bow.
- Top row: Empty | Stick | String.
- Middle row: Stick | Empty | String.
- Bottom row: Empty | Stick | String.
You can mirror this recipe horizontally. Once the bow is ready, stock up on arrows for normal ranged combat.
22. Using, Finding, and Enchanting a Bow
Controls: Hold the use button to draw, then release to shoot. Drawing farther increases arrow speed and damage, up to the fully drawn limit.
Bows work well against skeletons, creepers, ghasts, blazes, the Ender Dragon, and enemies above you, or whenever distance helps. Besides crafting, you can get bows through villager trading, fishing, and occasional skeleton drops.
Common late-game setup: Power V, Unbreaking III, Flame, Punch II, and either Infinity or Mending.
Infinity favors sustained arrow supply; Mending favors long-term maintenance. In standard survival, the two cannot normally coexist on the same bow.
23. Crossbow Recipe
Materials: 3 sticks, 2 string, 1 iron ingot, and 1 tripwire hook produce 1 crossbow.
- Top row: Stick | Iron ingot | Stick.
- Middle row: String | Tripwire hook | String.
- Bottom row: Empty | Stick | Empty.
Compared with a bow, a crossbow needs an extra iron ingot and tripwire hook, but it can stay loaded.
24. Crossbow Differences and Exclusive Enchantments
Preloading: A bow must be drawn before shooting. A crossbow can be loaded ahead of time, put away while still loaded, and fired as soon as you meet an enemy.
Crossbows can also shoot firework rockets. Rockets intended to deal explosion damage need firework stars in their recipe; starless rockets made for flight do not provide the same damage setup.
- Quick Charge III: Shortens loading time.
- Piercing IV: Lets arrows pass through multiple targets.
- Multishot: Fires projectiles in several directions at once.
Piercing and Multishot are mutually exclusive, so a normal survival build must choose one.
Bows suit everyday survival combat, while crossbows offer distinctive options for PvP, village raids, fireworks, and preloaded shots. Carry both if your inventory has room.
25. Arrow Recipe
Materials: 1 flint, 1 stick, and 1 feather produce 4 arrows.
- Upper slot: Flint.
- Middle slot: Stick.
- Lower slot: Feather.
Place all three ingredients in a vertical column in the crafting table's 3Γ3 grid.
26. Getting Arrows and Ingredients in Bulk
Flint: Mainly obtained by digging gravel. Sticks: Crafted from planks. Feathers: Mainly from chickens; build a chicken farm if you rely heavily on archery.
Later, you can establish a direct arrow supply. Skeleton farms provide arrows, bones, and some bows. Fletcher villagers trade arrows for emeralds, reducing the need to keep collecting flint and feathers.
27. Shears: Recipe and Durability
Materials: 2 iron ingots produce 1 pair of shears. Place the ingots diagonally.
- Top row: Empty | Iron ingot.
- Bottom row: Iron ingot | Empty.
Shears have 238 base durability. They use little iron yet serve many farming and building purposes.
28. Six Common Uses for Shears
- Harvesting wool: Shorn sheep regrow wool by eating grass. Sheep farming with shears provides an ongoing supply without killing sheep for every batch.
- Collecting leaves: Harvest intact leaf blocks for landscaping, gardens, and hedges.
- Collecting cobwebs and other blocks: Use shears to gather cobwebs while exploring abandoned mineshafts and special structures.
- Harvesting honeycomb: Use shears on a bee nest or beehive when it is ready to harvest as part of your beekeeping routine.
- Carving pumpkins: Use shears on a pumpkin to turn it into a carved pumpkin.
- Removing mob equipment: Since Chase the Skies, shears can remove saddles, horse armor, harnesses, and llama carpets from eligible mobs.
Shears belong in both your farm supplies and your everyday building or exploration kit.
29. Flint and Steel: Recipe and Durability
Materials: 1 iron ingot and 1 flint produce 1 flint and steel. This is a shapeless recipe; place the ingredients in separate slots.
Flint and steel has 64 base durability, consumed by normal use. Before entering the Nether or doing repeated ignition work, check that it has uses left.
30. Six Uses for Flint and Steel
- Starting fires: Create fire in a valid location.
- Opening a Nether portal: Build an obsidian frame, then ignite the space insideβthe standard way to enter the Nether.
- Igniting TNT: Light a placed TNT block directly.
- Triggering creepers: Flint and steel can ignite a creeper, a niche tactic rarely needed in ordinary survival.
- Lighting campfires and candles: Relight compatible blocks.
- Automatic ignition: Put flint and steel in a dispenser and use a redstone signal to light a valid spot in front of it.
V. Compasses, Clocks, and Maps
31. Compass Recipe
Materials: 4 iron ingots and 1 redstone dust produce 1 compass.
- Top row: Empty | Iron ingot | Empty.
- Middle row: Iron ingot | Redstone dust | Iron ingot.
- Bottom row: Empty | Iron ingot | Empty.
Arrange iron ingots in a cross around the redstone dust. A regular compass's usefulness depends on where your base is relative to world spawn.
32. A Regular Compass Points to World Spawn
Direction: In the Overworld, a regular compass points to world spawn, not north or your personal bed spawn.
If your base is near the original spawn area, a compass is handy for returning. If you moved thousands of blocks away, it will not point directly home.
Using a bed does not change a regular compass's target. After moving far away, keep coordinates or establish another navigation method.
33. Nether Navigation and Lodestone Compasses
Regular compasses: Outside the Overworld, including the Nether and the End, they cannot correctly point to world spawn, so the needle spins randomly.
Using a compass on a lodestone binds it to that block's coordinates and dimension, creating a lodestone compass. In the same dimension as its target, it points to that lodestone.
The needle spins again if you leave the target's dimension or the lodestone is destroyed. Place one at an important location such as a Nether base, then bind a compass for navigation over a wider area.
34. Clock Recipe
Materials: 4 gold ingots and 1 redstone dust produce 1 clock.
- Top row: Empty | Gold ingot | Empty.
- Middle row: Gold ingot | Redstone dust | Gold ingot.
- Bottom row: Empty | Gold ingot | Empty.
Use the compass layout, replacing the surrounding iron ingots with gold.
35. Clocks for Underground Trips
Main use: Tell whether it is day or night in the Overworld while in caves, underground bases, windowless buildings, or on long mining trips.
When you cannot see the sky, a clock helps you time your return to the surface. Daytime still does not make every location safe; watch shaded areas and nearby hostile mobs.
The Nether and the End do not follow the normal Overworld day-night cycle, so a regular clock cannot act as a useful day-night timer there. You do not need one specifically for Nether exploration.
36. Java Edition Map Recipe
Materials: 8 paper and 1 compass produce 1 empty map.
- Top row: Paper | Paper | Paper.
- Middle row: Paper | Compass | Paper.
- Bottom row: Paper | Paper | Paper.
Use the empty map first to start recording the local terrain. Carry it as you explore to fill in the rest of its coverage area.
37. Regular Maps and Locator Maps in Bedrock
Regular empty map: Fill the 3Γ3 crafting grid with 9 paper in Bedrock Edition. This map lacks the player-position marker found on a locator map.
Locator map: Include a compass in crafting, or add one to an eligible regular map, to gain player-position tracking.
Keep the two types straight when packing for Bedrock exploration. If you need an on-map position marker to navigate, bring a locator map.
38. Five Map Levels and a Paper-Saving Method
Coverage: Higher map levels cover larger areas at a smaller scale. This is zooming out, not enlarging terrain details.
- Level 0: 128Γ128 blocks.
- Level 1: 256Γ256 blocks.
- Level 2: 512Γ512 blocks.
- Level 3: 1,024Γ1,024 blocks.
- Level 4: 2,048Γ2,048 blocks, the usual maximum level.
A map plus 8 paper on a crafting table expands coverage by one level. A cartography table requires just 1 paper per expansion, saving plenty of paper and sugar cane when mapping multiple regions.
39. Banner Markers on Java Maps
Marking locations: Hold a map and use it on a banner within its area to add a marker. This handy Java feature does not work the same way in Bedrock.
Mark your home, villages, strongholds, caves, farms, trading halls, portals, and important builds. Marking places you revisit makes them easier to find after long trips.
VI. Leads and Updated Animal Transport
40. Why the Old Lead Recipe Is Outdated
Old recipe: 4 string and 1 slimeball made 2 leads. Many older guides therefore told players to find slimes first.
That recipe belongs to older versions. Modern leads no longer need a slimeball, so plan your materials around the updated recipe.
41. The Lead Recipe Used in 2026
Current materials: 5 string produce 2 leads. Chase the Skies replaced the old recipe's slimeball with string.

Kill spiders, break down cobwebs, and collect enough string to make leads. Moving animals early on no longer requires finding slimes first.
42. Leading and Tethering Animals
Traditional use: Lead eligible animals such as cows, sheep, pigs, horses, donkeys, llamas, and camels, then attach the lead to a fence.
For an early animal farm, bring animals to base and move them into pens. Watch drops, obstacles, and leash distance along the way so animals do not get stuck or break the connection.
43. Mob Chains, Boats, and Happy Ghast Transport
Updated features: Leads can connect eligible mobs to one another, form animal chains, and support boat towing and happy ghast transport. Boats and certain large mobs can be attached to a happy ghast for transport.
Regular leash connections snap at about 12 blocks, while happy ghast connections have a 16-block snapping distance. Leave room for turns, takeoffs, landings, and obstacles rather than treating those distances as a guaranteed working margin in every situation.
VII. Minecarts and Rail Systems
44. Minecart Recipe
Materials: 5 iron ingots produce 1 minecart. Arrange them in a U-shaped cart body.
- Top row: Empty | Empty | Empty.
- Middle row: Iron ingot | Empty | Iron ingot.
- Bottom row: Iron ingot | Iron ingot | Iron ingot.
The recipe occupies only two rows, so you can shift the whole arrangement up one row.
45. Using a Minecart and Understanding Speed
How to ride: Lay rails, place the minecart on the track, and get in.
Under normal default rules, with no experimental minecart changes enabled, the top speed on ordinary straight track is about 8 meters per second, or roughly 8 blocks per second.
Regular rails define the route but do not continuously supply power. Sustained travel usually needs energized powered rails.
46. Four Useful Minecart Variants
- Minecart with chest: Combine a minecart with a chest to store and transport cargo.
- Minecart with hopper: Combine a minecart with a hopper to collect dropped items along tracks and move them through automatic farms.
- Minecart with TNT: Combine a minecart with TNT for in-game explosive mechanisms.
- Minecart with furnace: In Java Edition, combine a minecart with a furnace to use fuel to propel a minecart system.
Chest minecarts specialize in hauling; hopper minecarts specialize in collecting. The cart gathering drops beneath farm blocks is a hopper minecart. A regular chest minecart cannot pick items up like a hopper.
47. Regular Rail Recipe
Materials: 6 iron ingots and 1 stick produce 16 regular rails.
- Top row: Iron ingot | Empty | Iron ingot.
- Middle row: Iron ingot | Stick | Iron ingot.
- Bottom row: Iron ingot | Empty | Iron ingot.
Six iron ingots make 16 track segments, so you can expand basic routes gradually. Powered rails also need gold and redstone; budget those materials separately.
48. What Regular Rails Do
Track shapes: Straight sections, curves, uphill slopes, and downhill slopes.
Regular rails form horizontal curves and are essential for turning. For stations, farm collection loops, and base transport, establish the track connections first, then add power and controls.
49. Why a Minecart Eventually Stops
Cause: Regular rails do not keep pushing the cart. It gradually loses momentum and stops.
Long routes need energized powered rails to restore speed. One initial push or a track made entirely of regular rails cannot sustain automatic high-speed travel over long distances.

Powered: They accelerate passing minecarts. Unpowered: They slow carts sharply and can bring them to a stop.
A station can stop a cart on an unpowered rail, then use a button to power it for departure. A stationary cart also needs a starting direction, usually supplied by a solid block at the track end or a slope. Powering any flat rail does not make a stopped cart choose its own direction.
51. Spacing Powered Rails
Relevant factors: Passengers, cargo load, slopes, and track shape all affect power requirements.
On a flat passenger route, start with powered rail sections every 20β30 blocks, then test and adjust. Uphill sections usually need denser power. Empty carts and freight carts do not necessarily work with passenger-route spacing.
You can optimize a major permanent railway later. Early on, there is little reason to keep stopping construction just to maximize spacing.
